Roseland Board of Education Update
Highlights of Thursday, March 26th meeting

Below please find a summary of the key highlights from our March Board of Education meeting ( short agenda ):

  • Mrs. Gross presented an overview ( please click here for presentation ) of Balanced Literacy Program, including achievements and recommendations
  • Mrs. Dacosta provided an update on the completion of the recent phase of PARCC testing, upcoming Wax Museum, Family Literacy day and Spirit day
  • Mr. Mastrangelo indicated that Board members are all parents with children in the school, elected to serve three year terms,volunteers who receive no monetary payments of any kind, and whose interest in having the best school, environment and education are fully aligned with parents
  • Mr Mastrangelo provided an overview of the hiring process rigor for new staff, which includes advertising, committee reviews, classroom presentations, and reference checks. For some hires, the Personnel committee participates, and whose members are Mrs. DiGiacomo and Mrs. Gordon, both who work in Education.
  • The Board approved:
    • A new Business Administrator, Jason Bohm, replacing Dr Occhino, who has served as our interim BA for the past 2 years. (interim positions may be filled for a maximum of 2 years)
    • A new Supervisor of Technology, Katherine Thorn, who is replacing Ms. Marianne Hans McNeilly, who will be retiring at the end of the school year after 17 years.
    • A new Spanish teacher, Natalia Delgado, who after the tragic loss of beloved Señorita Baker, will be able to provide a consistent experience for our students in an area where we have struggled this year
    • New School security officer position
    • Increase in Summer School Enrichment tuition, the first increase in years, to $300 for the first child, $250 for each additional child, and $350 for non-residents
  • During Public comment, about twenty-five of the approximately eighty parents in attendance expressed their opinions about Mrs. Dacosta
  • The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2014 at 7:30pm in the Noecker Media Center, and will include the presentation for the 2015-2016 budget
