Roseland Board of Education Update
Highlights of Monday, June 1st meeting

Below please find a summary of the key highlights from our June 1 Board of Education meeting ( short agenda Donaldson agenda ):

  • The Student Council did a great job presenting all their accomplishments over the past year ( presentation )
  • Teachers representing the Enrichment Committee (includes Gifted & Talented program) presented proposed changes for next year ( presentation )
  • The board recognized staff for their milestone years of service and presented awards

  • The board recognized the retirement of Marianne Hans-McNeilly after 17 years
  • Ms. Marianne Hans-McNeilly presented a recommendation to move to Chrome books from iPads in grades 5-6 ( presentation )
  • Mrs. Dacosta provided an update about Red Nose day, Field trip to King and I, Jeff Lakes trip, consortium kickball tournament, officially done with PAARC for this year, grades 3&4 spelling bee, and the upcoming Dare graduation and move up days
  • Mr. Mastrangelo proposed the date of July 23 for the board’s annual goal planning session
  • Mr. Goldstein informed the board that the negotiations committee reached a memo of understanding with the Roseland Education Association (REA), to be presented for ratification by the full REA
  • The Board approved:
    • Family care leave for Shannon Kiernan-Goffan from 9/2/15 through 1/4/16
    • Classroom aides for 2015-2016 school year
    • Adoption of Words Their Way – Word Study in Action developmental model
    • West Essex High School senior service
    • Field trips to Farmstead Estates, Build-a-bear, and Crane’s Mill Retirement Community
    • Donation from Amerigroup Corporation “Watch Us Grow” program
      • During Public comment, about thirteen parents spoke up to indicate support for Principal Laura Dacosta

Donaldson Hearing

Principal Laura Dacosta requested a “Donaldson hearing” to challenge Superintendent Gross’s recommendation to non-renew her employment contract.  Ms. Dacosta requested that the Donaldson hearing occur in open public session. The Superintendent’s Statement of Reasons included her reasons for the recommendation for non-renewal.

  • Ms. Dacosta and Ms. Gross were both provided the opportunity to present and provide the Board with backup materials.
  • After hearing all of the evidence presented by both Ms. Dacosta and District Administration, the Board unanimously decided to take no further action regarding the Superintendent’s recommendation of the non-renewal of Ms. Dacosta’s employment contract.

The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 15 at 7:30pm in the Noecker Media Center.
