Who Can Vote?
The requirements to be eligible to vote in New Jersey include:
- You must be a citizen of the United States.
- You must be at least 18 years of age by the date of the election.
- You must have the capacity to vote.
- You must be registered to vote.
- You must be a resident of New Jersey and the county in which you live at least 30 days prior to the election.
- You cannot be serving a sentence or on parole or probation for an indictable offense.
Registering to Vote
Registration can be done in person or through the mail with the Essex County Commissioner of Registration. Voter registration forms can be easily found at your Municipal Clerk’s office, local library, MVC offices, and other state agencies or online here .
Remember that the forms must be filled out and mailed in. Faxes and e-mail are not acceptable.
Voting by Mail
In New Jersey, any voter can now vote by mail in any election. You do not need a reason to Vote by Mail.
A voter may vote by mail by completing the Application for Vote by Mail Ballot , and mailing the application to the Essex County Clerk, Hon. Christopher J. Durkin, Essex County Clerk, PO Box 690, Newark, NJ 07101-0690. Applications must be received up to 7 days prior to the election. A voter may also apply in person to the County Clerk until 3:00 p.m., the day before the election. The County Clerk cannot accept faxed or e-mailed copies of an Application for Vote by Mail Ballot, unless you are a Military or Overseas Voter, since an original signature is required.
